Biography of Sophia Holt

Before Sophia Holt was studying marine science at the University of Florida, she was a little girl who wanted to train dolphins.

When she was younger, her brother couldn’t pronounce her name, so he called her “Sosia.” Years later, another nickname, “Soroho,” came from her social media usernames, combining her middle and last names.

Holt has lived in Gainesville her entire life, but her interests have taken her far beyond her hometown. Her childhood dream of becoming a dolphin trainer eventually became an interest in marine biology and then photography for National Geographic.

Now, she is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in science at UF, where she studies marine science and minors in zoology. She expects to graduate in spring 2027.

“I’m passionate about the environment and the animals that exist within it,” Holt said. “I want to do everything in my power to help ensure there is a future for each and everyone of us on this planet.”

That passion has carried outside the classroom. Holt has volunteered with dog fostering groups, elementary school dance programs and coastal cleanups. She also volunteers with classes and research connected to her field of interest.

Her love for animals is also part of her home life. Holt has two dogs at her parents’ house: Lilo, a chocolate Labrador, and Stitch, a Chihuahua-Dachshund mix.

When she is not studying, Holt spends time with friends, makes art through activities such as banner-making and coloring, and follows her favorite sports teams. She is also a member of Phi Mu sorority.

One of the biggest influences on Holt’s childhood was Camp Crystal Lake, a summer camp outside Gainesville owned by the Alachua County School Board. She attended the camp as a child before returning as a staff member for two summers.

Her experiences have taken her beyond Gainesville, too. Holt visits St. John in the U.S. Virgin Islands, where her aunt lives and has even gone skydiving.

Holt’s first real job came at 15, when she became a hostess at Local Provisions. She was the restaurant’s first host and worked its soft opening with little training. Before that, she had spent several years babysitting for family friends.

She later worked as a sales attendant at Beside the Bride and as a nanny before becoming a Pilates instructor and Kids Club staff member at Gainesville Health and Fitness.

Each experience has added something different to Holt’s life, but her interest in helping others has remained consistent. She cares about making a difference in the lives of both animals and people, especially children, whom she sees as the future.

For Holt, the path ahead is still taking shape.
